On the Pulse: Anastasia Goodstein

Anastasia Goodstein knew she was “obsessed” with pop culture, but she was probably thinking, so what? Then, in 2004, she got the entrepreneurial itch and decided to take her obsession to the Internet, launching Ypulse.com, a lucrative youth marketing blog that currently produces content read by various executives at MTV, Seventeen magazine, psychologists and more.

Ypulse is fun and hip because Goodstein knows what’s up. “I just have an internal instinct to what seems kind of cool and what doesn’t,” she says. Foreseeing the proliferation of blogs and their business potential was a prediction many professionals may not have estimated. Goodstein recalls, “Some of my friends and family didn’t really understand what blogging was or how big of an impact it could have. It led to me getting a job at Current TV, and also led to my book deal.”


Now, the successful blogger, “keeps her finger on the pulse,” and on her keyboard, typing five days a week, blogging for teens, parents, teachers and high profile clients. With post titles, such as “The Decline in BFFs” and “The Next Phase of Hipsterism is Virtual,” it’s easy to understand why Ypulse is so popular with media and marketing professionals hoping to tap into the teen demographic.

“Marketers are aiming younger and younger,” says Goodstein. The professional blogger says it’s “just a reality,” and it is. Industry executives know Ypulse’s content is on point. Kids are consuming and purchasing like shopping’s going outta style. Those babysitting dollars have to be spent somewhere. And although some people don’t know what a ‘tween’ is (a youngster between 10 and 12, considered too old to be a child and too young to be a teenager), there’s no question that they are a prime market. “The fact that you’re hearing the word ‘tweens’ that’s not something I was hearing about years ago,” says Goodstein. “Their spending power has increased. It’s a huge market.”

Ypulse is pretty huge too. However, blogging isn’t just about posting items about anything and everything. Goodstein must post fresh, fun, entertaining content that will keep site visitors coming back for more. The entrepreneur says it’s “hard” to have something interesting to say every single day. “You have to be comfortable to know that some days you’re on and some days you’re not,” says Goodstein. “Some days I’ll blog and think it’s not so great, and people will really respond to that. And sometimes I’ll write something I think is so great and I won’t get a response back!”

Tons of visitors think Goodstein’s always “on.” “Luckily, I’ve never received that many negative comments,” she reveals. “I’ve been spared. I don’t know if that’s good or bad that I’m not so controversial.” All she knows is that it’s working. Forbes magazine, BusinessWeek, USA Today, The Boston Globe and dozens of other publications and websites have praised Ypulse.com. Ypulse is even holding a major conference July 16th and 17th at San Francisco’s Hotel Nikko.

When she’s not glued to her computer screen, Goodstein loves to go hiking and camping in San Francisco. She also does consulting and other writing as well. A gifted writer, she always has something interesting to say. “I’m writing a paper right now about this generation and how they live their lives online.” Goodstein’s first book, Totally Wired: What Teens and Tweens are Really Doing Online, came out in March and can be found at an Amazon.com checkout screen near you.

Additionally, the YPulse brand is expanding. Goodstein plans to bring “more” content, sites and events for everyone to enjoy. “The thing that people tell me most is that YPulse helps them do their jobs better without going to a million sites and without going to a lot of publications. The content seems to really resonate with people. I love that it is impacting people. That’s what keeps me going.”
