Q&A with Burns

E-mail Print PDF
Currently on a North American tour with electro popstar and fellow Scot, Calvin Harris, and hot off an incredible Saturday night set at Avalon in Hollywood, we caught up with rising star Burns to talk about his favorite tunes and the reason he likes Ke$ha.

Burns' new EP, So Many Nights is out in March, followed by a double disc set in April which features Burns originals and remixes of Ladyhawke, Passion Pit, The Gossip, Kasabian, Calvin Harris, and some classic faves. Find out more at: myspace.com/thisisburns

How’s the tour with Calvin Harris going?

Really well. I'm just in my hotel room in Vancouver - this is the first chance I've been able to sit down without being on a plane. The shows have been really good so far, great reactions...

Tell us something about Calvin Harris that most people might not know...
He invented the saxophone.

Any cool/funny stories from your US travels so far?

Hmm, we just rented a convertible Mustang to drive from LA to San Diego. That's pretty cool, isnt it?!

How do the US clubs and crowd compare to the UK?
I really enjoy playing to the US crowd because I don't think they're necessarily exposed to electronic music as much as we are over in the UK so it's nice to be able to surprise a few people, it's like fresh ears. A lot of the stuff I play they probably have never heard before so it's good to introduce them to it.

How do you choose which songs you want to remix?

I don't really choose them, the artists or label tend to choose me and then I just say whether I'd like to do it or not. I'll do a remix if there's an element in the original song that I like and know I could work into something new.

Who were some of your musical influences as a teenager?
As a teenager it was probably general 90s pop music because I listened to the radio a lot. As I got a bit older I obviously developed a taste for the electronic scene. I really liked Chicago house music and the French scene in the late 90s - Daft Punk, Roy Davis Jr, etc. Also a lot of influence came from my Mum's music collection - she has a loads of vinyl from the 70s/ 80s so I used to just sit and listen to them on an old record player we had in the house. I loved Cerrone, Chic, Dexter Wansell, Stevie Wonder, Georgio Moroder.

Who are some of your favorite artists/DJs right now?

Zombie Nation, Siriusmo, Le Le, Hudson Mohawke, Drake. Those are just the first few off the top of my head.

Lady Gaga or Ke$ha? And why?

Ke$ha, because she brushes her teeth with Jack Daniels.

What’s the best piece of advice you have for someone trying to get into the DJ/producer field?

To listen to as much music as possible and try to just make music for yourself and not what you think other people might like.

What’s your favorite way to spend a Saturday night?

Just sitting in front of the TV. I dont get to do it very often anymore so when I do I really enjoy it!
