INTO THE BLUE WITH JESSICA ALBA

Chatting with Jessica Alba is a lot like catching up with an old high school friend. Somehow she manages to seem familiar in that see-you-in-math-class kind of way, but at the same time maintaining her distance—letting me know she isn’t that same naïve girl I thought I knew…

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR NEW MOVIE, “INTO THE BLUE.”
It is an action thriller. It is based onfour scuba diving friends who find a sunken plane with obscene amounts of cocaine in it. The movie revolves around the themes of greed and fame.My character Sam is the moral center of the film.

I’VE READ THAT YOU’RE A CERTIFIED SCUBA DIVER. DID YOU GET TO SCUBA DIVE MUCH FOR THE MOVIE OR DURING YOUR FREE TIME?
I actually got to scuba dive a lot for the film. I got my certification at 13, so I always love to get in the water.

WHEN DID YOU DECIDE YOU WANTED TO BECOME AN ACTRESS?

I always wanted to be an actress. I was playing dress-up as a little kid and I started acting at age 12. My first film—”Camp Nowhere” — was great. I got cast when the lead dropped out, and it was my hair that got me in—it was the same length and color of the original girl!

DO YOU REGRET NOT HAVING THE TYPICAL COLLEGE EXPERIENCE?

I don’t. College seems like an extension of high school, and for me, it would be like going backwards.

OUT OF ALL OF THE CHARACTERS YOU’VE PLAYED, WHICH ONE DO YOU RELATE TO THE MOST?
All of my characters are a piece of me. Dark Angel brought out the serious, together side of me, while Sue Storm (Fantastic Four) showcased my maternal side.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING AN ACTRESS?
The activism I get to do. For this film I get to talk to people about saving the reef—since it is about scuba diving. It really allows me to help. I love that.
