Weekly Spin: Of Montreal "Hissing Fauna, Are you the Destroyer?
Product of the experimental Elephant Six Collective, Georgia band Of Montreal is fulfilling the psychedelic American dream with their thirteenth release Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? Staying in league with the poppy, electronically driven Satanic Twins, Of Montreal manages to embrace fuller, more accessible melodies this time around. While this leaves the band closer to pop and further from the revered realm of “experimentation,” those of you who adore of Montreal’s repetitious, synthesized sounds will not be disappointed.
Popular opinion of Of Montreal is usually split with one camp finding them downright annoying, others praising their unique pop aesthetic. No matter where you hail from, the first moments of the album make one thing is certain: Of Montreal makes catchy music. Even tracks like “A Sentence of Sorts in Kongsinger” are pleasant, though the overall beat has the simple, repetitious complexity of two hands clapping. “Gronlandic Edit” is immediately gripping with its funky intro that displays a rare but ample level of base. The beat begs listeners to get up and move, even before singer Kevin Barnes mentions “all the party people dancing…”
Despite moments of successful retro-psychedelia and undeniably enticing electronic pop, there are some awkward transitions and pauses, book-ended by strange sounds and utterances from Barnes, that keep the album from a certain level of solidity Of Montreal could use. Nevertheless, the album is incessantly toe-tapping and a rare source of guilt-free pop to enjoy when you want to be in, create, or compliment a pleasant mood.
