Weekly Spin (Two this week!)

Like constructing a Super-Transformer by arranging several action figures, Swan Lake has brought together members of major indie bands to form a beast that can’t be tamed. Bejar of Destroyer, Krug of Wolf Parade, and Mercer of Frog Eyes created their debut album “Beast Moans,” aptly titled as this monster of a collaboration wakes from slumber and releases a series of discordant bellows that fuses, becoming simultaneously frightening and joyous.

Saturday Night Rating:
5/5 stars (Jagjaguwar; 2006)

The seemingly disharmonious mesh of reverberations sounds like individuals grabbing a piece of the song and stretching it in his distinct direction, but don’t be discouraged. “Widow’s Walk” pulls you into this world of faux-cacophony with its increasing tension and blending of seemingly contradictory styles. Mercer’s layered chants and Krug’s voice coax you into a trance you’re suspended in even as you go from one track to the next – not for any lack of variation but rather for awe in the array of musical arrangements.
