Blind Date. Flavor of Love. Fear Factor. Breaking Up with Shannon Doherty. In a world where everyone and their mom has a camera crew in tow, you’ve seriously got to step it up if you’re bringing another one of these bad boys to the plate.Kevin Tancharoen, a 22-year-old producer/director/creator, is braving the possibility of cursing the world with another mindless half hour of babble (ahem, House of Carters, ahem) with his new series, TwentyFourSeven.
The Entourage-inspired show (which follows a group of friends trying to make it in Hollywood) will be next in the line of reality-drama hybrids to be featured on MTV that we love so much, like Laguna Beach and 8th & Ocean. Considering that drama filled “reality” shows are probably the biggest guilty pleasure for anyone with eyes, things are looking big for TwentyFourSeven and Kevin Tancharoen.
So how exactly, at 22, did Kevin Tancharoen end up with an MTV reality show? While most twenty-somethings opt to send in some shameless home video detailing why they would be the perfect stranger to pick to live in a house, work together with a few other randoms, and have their lives taped, Kevin decided to approach the network in a slightly different manner.
As a young’n prodigy dancer Kevin already had a resume packing lots of big names, having worked with Britney, Christina, Jessica and the boy-band formerly known as *NSYNC. In 2004, he had even directed a fun-times-dancing-for-kids DVD, Jammax Kids. Like the millions of VHS cassettes that flow through the MTV doors during Road Rules casting season, this DVD was Kevin’s golden ticket.
Kevin’s ventures with MTV rerouted his career back to his lifelong obsession of filmmaking... and special effects. “I started off as a little kid wanting to be like the Stan Winston guy who does all the special effects and creature shots.” Kevin described, “You know the Ninja Turtle animatronics masks and all that kind of stuff. I even went to class for that when I was thirteen and it was amazing.”
Amazing, also, is how Kevin has been able to keep a level head despite living life in the fast lane. “I know to be here in Hollywood at my age, it’s very easy to get sucked into the hipster, clubbing world,” Kevin explained. “TwentyFourSeven is about those kinds of guys, but I stay out of it. The process is much more seducing than the lifestyle.” And unlike most scatter brained 22-year-olds, Kevin’s got his eye on the prize. “It’s always about the integrity of the project instead of just me being the director on the set and trying to act like I know what I’m doing all the time,” Kevin said. “Because honestly I don’t know what I’m doing at all times.”
Obviously extremely focused, Kevin already has plans set for a future in scripted TV and then, hopefully, in feature length films. And although he’s practically a vet of the entertainment industry already, Kevin’s far from scrapping his oh-so-LA job and starting a profession as an accountant. “The process of moviemaking is still magical for me,” he said. “It hasn’t lost its touch with all the technical stuff.” Clearly, TwentyFourSeven will only mark the beginning for this triple-threat entertainer.
