It’s hard to embrace a directive of playful delight when we live in a culture of anxiety and color-coded fear alerts. But Men, Women & Children have issued new orders and it’s to shake that thang and have a good time doing it. As singer TJ Penzone explained, “We were getting tired of a lot of the stuff that was coming out. This was our backlash.” But a rock band wasn’t their initial objective, he confessed. “It was supposed to be a project where Nick and Todd were gonna make up some video game Nintendo music on the internet. It morphed into a fun party.”
Every performance keeps that celebratory ethic alive with outrageous outfits, dancing, and bubble machines – but the performances would be nothing without the music. Former Glassjaw guitarist Todd Wienstock brings along those sweetly infectious melody lines from good rock music and merges them with some serious synthesizer boogie beats. “Some bands sound like one band and I feel we sound like 30 bands.”
Although their basic ambition isn’t momentous, it still has a goal: to make people happy. As “Dance in My Blood” professes, “You don’t need a reason to get out on the dance floor.”
