Life on the road can be hard. It can turn a guy crazy and make a man insane. And sometimes, it can drive a drummer to climb a tree and defecate onto the world below. If you don’t believe that, just ask Will Pugh, one of the minds behind the power-pop rock band Cartel.

“Kevin, our drummer, took a shit out of a tree one time. We were driving from Dallas to Phoenix on our day off bored to tears. We were hanging out at some picnic area and he had to go to the bathroom and there were no toilets. So, he shit one out of a tree. It was pretty funny.”

But funny as Pugh’s tales of poo may be, it would be a massive mistake to compare the music Cartel makes to human excrement. As a matter of fact, feces are far from the most influential story that the band has to tell. Evident by their Saturday Night Loud! single “Honestly,” these boys have heroes so solid that they never stood a chance of being flushed.

“Led Zeppelin, man. Their rhythms are too good. And you gotta love the Beach Boys for the vocals. And the Beatles for experimentation. They tinkered around with some crazy sounds, but still found a way to keep it poppy.”

Though placing Cartel in a category with such legends might be a bit too soon, one should never say never. Give Cartel a chance and you may be looking at one of the legendary influences for upcoming bands decades down the line. Just don’t stand underneath them if they happen to be climbing a tree.
