Coachella Preview 2009

E-mail Print PDF
It’s time to pack your sunscreen, tents, pillows and glowsticks — all necessary goods for survival when it comes to the Coachella Music and Arts Festival, held in Indio, CA every April. Showcasing the latest and greatest rock, alternative, electronic and hip hop artists, Coachella draws a crowd as diverse as the music. While this year’s lineup includes big-timers like Paul McCartney, The Cure and Morrissey, it’s important not forget all the other talented artists making it to the desert fest. Here are a few favorites to keep an ear out for...

Ghostland Observatory

This Texan electro funk duo should make quite the impression. With one sporting a cape, and the other working his pigtails, Thomas and Aaron of Ghostland Observatory are a breath of fresh air. Their single “Dancing on My Grave” is basically an ‘80s power rock dream on a techno high. Somehow the band also honors the raw rock we love, with their lead vocalist sounding a touch like Freddie Mercury.

Bajofondo

A fiery new genre comes to life with this South American group. “Pa’Bailar,” the eight-piece Latin group’s electronic tango track, is sure to make you loosen those hips. Add a violinist among a vast array of other instruments, and electronica has reached new ground with Bajofondo.

Crystal Castles

Their dance hit “Crimewave” has taken over the electronic scene with its infectious sound. The Canadian group Crystal Castles gives off nothing but pure pulse-pounding perfection, and have been known to stir up a crowd—they were shutdown at Glastonbury last year for vocalist Alice Glass’s stage antics!

Cage the Elephant

We need more high-energy bands like Cage the Elephant. Be sure to listen for “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked,” which shows off the group’s funkrock sound and “In One ear,” which reveals Cage the Elephant’s punk undertones.

Fleet Foxes

These Baroque Pop revivalists are saviors when it comes to dreamy folk music. Fleet Foxes like their live performances like they their music: whimsical and fun. You can hear their softer side in “Blue Ridge Mountains,” and get more of a feel for harmonious jams in their latest single, “Mykonos.”

Dr. Dog

In their latest album “Fate,” this band really unveils their ‘60s psychedelic sound with big personalities and even bigger aptitudes for music. The Philly quintet gives screeching soulful sounds in “The Ark,” and just one listen to “The Old Days” will have you tripping through time.

Blitzen Trapper

This is Portland experimental folk at its finest. “Sleepytime in the Western World” will have you up and dancing, and “Big Black Bird” could be interpreted as this generation’s “Free Bird.” Throw in a tambourine and you’ve got yourself a great live set.

Gang Gang Dance

Far from normal, GGD brings sporadic noises and eccentricity through spiritual chants and the like. Imagine a flow of consciousness in musical form, simultaneously chaotic and mellow. This Manhattan group has become famous in their area for their unique sound, which is undeniable in songs like “Desert Storm,” a spooky yet dancey track.

Lykke Li

This Swedish pop gem pumps soul and electro through your veins. her dreamy voice and melodious beats definitely put her in the running with today’s other top indie ladies. her single “Little Bit” will give you a feel for her hypnotizing voice and unique beats.

Friendly Fires

This band has had a nice breakthrough recently, with hits like “Jump in the Pool” and “Paris” that show Friendly Fires is nothing short of powerful. Their funky sound and hearty rock beats should get you fired up too.
