The future is looking pretty good for 26-year-old Aziz Ansari. After writing and starring in his own sketch comedy show Human Giant, he’s now making movies with the likes of Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler and starring in NBC’s new series, Parks and Recreation.

How did you land the part?
As soon as I heard about the show, I purchased speedboats for both executive producers, Greg Daniels and Mike Schur. I filled both boats with DVDs of my sketch comedy show Human Giant. While speedboating around, they watched the DVDs, became fans and cast me in the show. It was a really expensive plan, but I am in the show, so I guess it worked out.
What can you tell us about your character Tom?
Tom's the slickest dude in Pawnee, ID. He's married, but he's constantly showing love to the ladies and likes to make sure his game isn't slipping. He dresses to the nines in the coolest designer suits. In terms of style, I'd say he likes to think of himself as the Kanye West of local government. All that aside, he's also kind of a prick.

What’s it been like working with Amy Poehler?
It’s been great. Originally there was a little tension as Amy and I both owned and operated competing Arby's franchises on La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles. I called in a few fake health board complaints on Amy's franchise and it was shut down. Luckily, she didn't hold a grudge and we've been having a great time working together. This would also be a great time to mention you can currently get 3 Big Cheddar Roast Beef Sandwiches for $5 at your local Arby's.
How do you think the show compares to The Office?
Obviously, it’s similar in style and tone to The Office, but at the same time it feels like a much different world. Greg and Mike are so good at this that I think they've really figured out how to get you into these new characters very quickly. It feels like you are watching the documentary crew find a whole new group of interesting people.

Is the show very tightly scripted or is there room for some improv? Do you prefer one style over the other?
The scripts are really tight and funny, but we also improvise. It's, "Here's a great script, but feel free to be loose and come up with your own stuff." That's my preferred style, as opposed to say "Here's a crap script, make it funny!" or "Here's a great script, do not mess up my masterpiece!"
Would you like to write an episode eventually?
That could be fun, but I've actually been spending more time brainstorming catering ideas. Here's my current gem - have a Top Chef Challenge where they have to cater our shoot days for a week. Pretty good right?
What are some of your favorite TV shows right now?
Comedy wise, my friend Jon Glaser made this show Delocated, that's on Adult Swim and is brilliant. I also really enjoy Eastbound and Down on HBO. As far as non-comedy, I have to say Lost has been on fire.
Parks and Recreation premieres Thursday, April 9 at 9 p.m. on NBC
