John C. McGinley aka "Bob" from Office Space

Despite the fact he’s had a recognizable face for the last 20 years, John C. McGinley might not be a name you recognize. However, you’re probably more than familiar with the different personas he’s portrayed, including Dr. Perry Cox on Scrubs and Bob (the Michael Bolton-loving “consultant” from Office Space).

John, you’re about halfway through the current season of
Scrubs at this point. What else is in store for Dr. Perry Cox?
Well, so far the storylines, aside from the musical, have been about the arrival of my second kid and they’ve just been unbelievable.

Is that expected to go beyond this season?
If you and I are still talking this time next year, that in itself will be a blessing. We were barely invited back to another season this year, probably because we were nominated for an Emmy, but the way everyone seems to be balancing their checkbooks, it seems like they’re not taking another year’s worth of salary into account.

It’s a shame shows like Scrubs and Arrested Development have to fight their way into another season, all the while Dancing With The Stars and Survivor are set for years to come.
I don’t know how to say this in a more diplomatic way, but that stuff is lost on me. I don’t care for any of it. I can’t even imagine sitting down for an hour and watching Dancing With The Stars. But gosh, their ratings burry us though.

Over the past two decades, you’ve had the opportunity to work with Oliver Stone on six films. That having been said, where the heck were you in Alexander, man?
I was doing Scrubs. But I watched it a couple of times. Really, it was more interesting to watch while listening to Oliver’s commentary. You could see the landscape he was painting. Unfortunately, movies aren’t usually made with DVD audio commentary in mind.

So, you’re doing a sequel to Are We There Yet?
Yeah, we did Are We Done Yet?, again with Ice Cube, who was also the producer. Honestly, it was pretty much one of the best film experiences I’ve ever had. There’s something to be said about having your starting quarterback also as the producer. Cube is just this man of integrity. He’s got an unimpeachable integrity about him.

I have just one last question. In Office Space, how difficult was it to profess that you celebrated Michael Bolton’s entire catalogue?
Near impossible. I actually wrote that line, since I just wanted this guy to seem like he was from Mars. Mike (Judge) gave me this wide, wide birth to occupy. The night before, I stayed up writing stuff I could never imagine being a part of. I can’t imagine owning a Michael Bolton album. I can’t even fathom downloading a Michael Bolton song onto my iPod. It’s an anathema. If someone were actually that committed to that, it would be absurd. And this guy is really, really proud of the fact that he feels connected to Michael Bolton. It’s…it’s genius.
