Heidi Montag from 'The Hills'

Heidi, you’re a ripe 20-years-old in the mist of a bustling young Hollywood, you’re an actress, you’re on MTV and you have an opportunity that millions would do anything for. Is this something you dreamed of? Yeah definitely! This something I’ve wanted since I was young and I’m having fun with it. I’m just trying to be in the moment.

Well working as an actor in the twenty-first century is all about identity. Have you found it difficult to brand yourself considering that you’re more or less an independent contractor in the acting field?
Actually, I think it’s easier when you’re more in control of branding yourself and you can kind of decide what does and doesn’t work. It’s better because I have a lot more control. It’s my image and it’s what I want.

Have there been people pressuring you to do what you didn’t necessarily want to do? I make my own decisions and I decide what I do and don’t want to do. I definitely won’t let anybody pressure me into anything.

Isn’t it daunting when you think that now since you’re well-known, your single smallest action can have an indefinite reaction upon your career? That’s just part of what you sign up for. It can either be really fun or really bad, but either way I rather be in this position than not.

What’s been the greatest perk with this job so far? It’s just really fun. I’ve met a lot of amazing people. I think that I have been exposed to a world that most people aren’t. I’ve learned a lot.

Such as? Just personal lessons and things like that, learning how the industry works. With certain disappointments, I’ve learned that nothing is free and that everything comes down to you. Nothing is going to happen if you don’t make it happen.

Have there been many downfalls? Yeah, sometimes it is a little bit stressful. I’m the one who’s going to decide how big my career is or isn’t.

Do you ever feel inclined to provide a sense of responsibility in your work, to be a positive role model or do you just blow that off to go where the show wants to go? I do and I don’t because, at the same time, this is my life, and I can’t revolve around other people thinking about what reactions they might have. I definitely want to be a good role model and help young girls make the right decisions. But at the same time, I’m a twenty-year-old living my life and it just so happens to be on TV.

As people probably recognize you as they see you out and about in your everyday life, do you feel the need to continue working and provide a positive role model? I don’t go out a lot and I don’t go clubbing a lot. I don’t think it’s a good thing to be promoting to young kids that it’s a cool thing to be partying and all that. I’ve just been keeping a low profile and being responsible.

Does it ever bother you that your job requires you to work even when you’re not technically at work? Yeah, definitely. I feel like I’m working 24 hours a day! If I’m not on the phone with somebody, then I’m in my own head thinking about what I want to do.

Had you not achieved success working in television, what do you think that you would be doing right now?
I don’t know. I could be hosting or I could be living in Italy. There are so many possibilities of where my life could have gone. But I can’t really imagine anything else.
