I remember when...

In the 1960's, my father owned a garment factory -- Dori Ann -- on the 4th floor of 743 Santee Street. He was a subcontractor for dress designer Fred Rothchild. Every Saturday, we'd go to his factory to help...

My brother swept up the balls of lint for 25-cents. I was responsible for cleaning the break area and tidying the changing room. I also helped my mother who would sort "stacks" of fabric that had been cut and would later be turned into dresses that were sold at Penney's, Saks, and other department stores.

It was an interesting childhood. It's hard to believe his factory is now lofts!
