Sacramento’s Self Against City has fused pop-punk with Indie rock and sweet melodies to give you fun, catchy tunage. It was only a few years ago when they were “trying out some cats around Sacramento” before a DJ gave Jack and Jeff the deets on John, then two became four. Now, they’re currently on tour, bringing ear candy to speakers near you. They dig Paul McCartney, Led Zeppelin and The Discovery Channel. Bragging rights include being the first band signed to Rushmore records. On “Becoming a Monster,” John says he will “never forget how it all started.” He better not.

What’s the name “Self Against City” all about?
The name came from David Bowie’s “Suffragette City.” Johnny heard the song, and thought the radio DJ said “Self Against City.” [He] thought ‘Man, that would make a cool name!’ We realized that song was “Suffragette City” and no one had the name “Self Against City.” He thought it was a good idea. Today, I guess the name means kind of like it’s-us-against-the-world.
If you weren’t a rockstar you would be a…?
I’ve always been a believer in the idea that if you have a plan B, your plan A isn’t going to succeed. So I haven’t ever even given a thought to whatever else I’d do.
The American Idol craze…should we all be irritated?
I definitely don’t think it’s something to celebrate. Eventually people will come to their senses. The perception of what is “music” should be looked at. The integrity of music has depleted and American Idol is not helping.
